Hurst
House is named after William Hurst, who, in the 1820's lived in an impressive
house in West Bank called, appropriately enough, West Bank House. He operated
a tollgate for all the goods that were brought into West Bank from the River
Mersey. He also operated a toll road about half a mile north of the River Mersey.
The fee for use of this road was 3d (the equivalent of just over 1p in today's
money). In all, he was a very wealthy man!
